BACK SURGERY

Back surgery units attend to a wide variety of complications in infants, children, teens and adults, involving multiple specialties.

Degenerative complications related to intervertebral disc disorders, joint deterioration between spinal vertebra, and spinal stenosis are the most frequent.

Spinal distortion (scoliosis, kyphosis) which generally emerges during childhood and is related to other disorders is prevalent, but not so common.

As in all skeletal systems, the spinal column is exposed to trauma and tumor processes. These and other complications are treated by the Back Unit.

Treatment Modalities

Back problems are generally treated with a combination of physical therapy, physiological treatments and medications, as well as treatments in the pain management clinic. A limited number of patients require surgical interventions which are conducted in the unit.

The following surgical procedures of the back and spine are conducted:

  • Scoliosis straightening.
  • Disc transplantation.
  • Slipped disc resection.
  • Inter-vertebral fusion.
  • Tumor resection.
  • Treatments employing percutaneous techniques (in cases of osteoporosis fractures).
  • Fixation to stabilize vertebral fractures caused by accidents.
  • Mechanical disc transplantation.
All the specialists work in close collaboration with Physical Therapy Institutes and Pain Clinics, as well as Imaging Units, facilitating some of the most modern imaging techniques including X-ray, MRI, CT, and nuclear medicine.
